* * * * * Brangwyn, Sir Frank
(b Bruges, 12 May 1867; d Ditchling, Sussex, 11 June 1956). English painter and graphic artist. Largely self-taught, he helped his father, William Brangwyn, who was an ecclesiastical architect and textile designer in Bruges. After his family moved to England in 1875 Brangwyn entered the South Kensington Art Schools and from 1882 to 1884 worked for William Morris. Harold Rathbone and Arthur Mackmurdo encouraged him to copy Raphael and Donatello in the Victoria and Albert Museum, complementing his already broad knowledge of Dutch and Flemish art.

Lithography serves magnificently the swift sure impulse of his drawing which, except in the case of the very large posters, has always been done direct upon the stone, and deservedly has he succeeded to the presidency of the Senefelder Club. ... The energy of the workman is a favourite theme with Mr. Brangwyn. *
Before Frank Brangwyn emerged as one of England's premier early twentieth century etchers, he had already established a strong reputation as a watercolourist, illustrator and artistic lithographer. Born in Bruges, Brangwyn came to England as a teenager and apprenticed under William Morris for approximately three years. He then went to sea and travelled extensively, visiting Asia Minor (1888), Algeria and Morocco (1889), and South Africa and Spain (1891). Other destinations included Italy, Russia, Constantinople, Tunis, Malay and Japan. Frank Brangwyn first exhibited his art at the Royal Academy in 1885. During the following years he became a member of such international institutions as the Institute de France, the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, the Munich Secession, Artists Association of Vienna, Societe Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Royal Academy, Milan, and the Royal Academy, Stockholm. Brangwyn became an Associate of the Royal Academy, London, in 1904 and an Academician in 1919. He was knighted in London in 1941.
A Cooper at Work originates from a 1905 portfolio entitled, "The Spirit of the Age: The Work of Frank Brangwyn A.R.A." Edited by the Brangwyn scholar, Walter Shaw Sparrow, the portfolio contained 20 full sheet illustrations of Brangwyn's paintings, drawings and etchings. Also three original lithographs were included for this publication, all printed by Thomas Way. The original lithographs are entitled Brickmakers at Work, The Steam Excavator and A Cooper at Work. Each was printed on wove paper and backed onto a stiffer sheet of laid paper for inclusion into the portfolio.
A Cooper at Work is recognized as perhaps Brangwyn's greatest original lithograph. It was first published in a small edition of hand signed impressions in 1895. This then represents the second and final edition of this truly monumental work of art.
